Douglas Townsend is an ITIC Senior Advisor and the organization’s lead representative in the UK, in which capacity he coordinates ITIC’s regional initiatives in Eurasia.
Doug’s responsibilities include serving as Secretary of the Caspian Minerals Taxation Committee (CMTC), Project Director of the Kazakhstan Minerals Taxation Academy (KMTA), and Project Director of the Azerbaijan Minerals Taxation Academy, Baku.
Doug joined ITIC as a Senior Advisor following a distinguished career in the Australian diplomatic corps, in which he served as Australian Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Hungary, Switzerland, Senegal, and Cote d’Ivoire, in addition to earlier stints in Australian missions in Pakistan, Ireland and Vietnam. His government career also included service as Australian Investment Commissioner Europe and Australian nuclear industry negotiator.
From his base in London, Doug engages in broad outreach activities on behalf of ITIC with organizations such as the British-Kazakh Society, the Kazakhstan British Trade & Investment Council, the Uzbek-British Trade & Investment Council, and the Central Asia-Turkey Business Information Group. He is a member of the Anglo-Azerbaijani Society and of the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House).
